Be The One

Hey there Wholetonians!
If I had to pick my five all time favorite movies, “The Matrix” would undoubtedly be in the mix. I will never forget the the scene where the character, The Oracle, asks Neo if he thinks he is, “The One.” Then she points to a plaque above the doorway that reads, “Temet Nosce” which is Latin for, “know thyself.”
You see, Neo had the gift, but he doubted himself. He expected, “The One,” to be someone else. Here is the kicker…unscramble the name, “Neo,” and you get, “One.” His destiny was in his name and he couldn’t see it. Often, that is the case with gifted people, they fail to realize who they are.
I want you to realize that being the one has absolutely nothing to do with luck, charm, intelligence, or whether your rich or poor… it depends on what YOU believe. Years ago, a wonderful pastor/evangelist, John Wimber, told the following story:
“A member of our church came to my office one day and asked me what the church was going to do about his neighbor that needed benevolence as they were starving and needed food. So I replied, “what is the church going to do for your neighbor?” He asked me the same question a second time, and I replied, “what is the church going to do for your neighbor?” The man became quite irritated and began to tell me how it was the churches responsibility to help his neighbor and I agreed with him! Quite angry by this time, the man blurted out, “so what is the church going to do for my neighbor?” I looked him in the eye lovingly and said, “you are the church and he is your neighbor…what are YOU going to do for him?” You see dear friends, sometimes we miss an opportunity because we defer to an agency or institution to handle a need we can easily tackle by being, the one.
30 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ 31 The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” Notice, the phrase, “love YOUR neighbor as yourself,” a great cross reference is, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
So here is a question…who are you and why are you here? To be quite frank with you, up until a few years ago…I wouldn’t have been able to answer that question! But in order to be the one, and have an impact on the world… you will need to find the answer. Here are a few more questions to help you find your answer:
- What is your passion?
- If the possibility of failure was erased, what one dream would become your reality?
- Who or what is keeping you from achieving that seemingly elusive dream?
- Why NOT you, and why NOT now?
Can’t…never could, tomorrow will always be tomorrow unless it’s today. In “The Matrix,” all the while Neo was making excuses for himself, Morpheus was telling him the truth about his ability and his identity. In the fight scene, Morpheus makes two powerful statements to Neo who is convinced that Morpheus is faster than he is: 1) “You are faster than this, don’t think you are…know you are.” 2) “Stop trying to hit me and hit me.”
Do you want to be the one? Then listen to your “Morpheus!” Maybe it’s your wife, your husband, your mother or father, or a close friend. Look around you. There is at least one person who knows who you are and why you are here. Let their truth replace your doubt. Trust me, when you finally believe… there is nothing you can’t accomplish!
Mark 9:23, “If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”
Until next time, “temet nosce,” or, know yourself, for when you do…you’ll “Be The One!”
